RESEARCH
As our client wants the art direction of the brand to be minimalistic and playful (/energetic), I looked for some references on Pinterest to have a better idea on it.
Fig 1.1 Blueberry Yogurt Poster Design
I like this design a lot. It is very simple, but with the splashing yogurt and the motion blurred blueberries, it makes the whole piece exciting. I also like the choice of typeface for "blueberry". It goes really well with the overall design.
Fig 1.2 B.T.R. Bar Brand and Packaging Design
I like the idea of utilizing the shadow effect on the text of the product as part of the graphical element. Despite the layout is really simple, the color combination makes the design look playful.
Fig 1.3 Caye Life - Sustainable Water Bottles
Fig 1.4 Lemon Macaron Poster Design
This layout is really interesting. I like the use of the round macarons with the round lemon, with the small text next to them. The white "Lemon" text placed behind the lemons is also an interesting take.
PROCESS
WEEK 3
After the presentation for task 1, we had a consultation with Ms Lilian for task 2. As our client does not have the actual cup designs, we are in charged of this part. These are the cup designs that I tried modelling in Blender, and our client prefer something like the one in a green box. Later on week 4, our client changed to selling bamboo tumblers instead of bamboo cups, and they got the images of the actual products. Thus, we do not need to design the products, but we still need to model them for the animation video.
Fig 2.2 Visual References (12.9.2023)
These are the visual references for the logo design. As per our client's request, they want and logo mark as well as a logo type. The overall art direction for the brand will be minimalistic and playful (/energetic).
Fig 2.3 Logo Attempts (12.9.2023)
These are the logo attempts by Cecilia during week 2. The one in the middle is preferred by our team. During meeting, our client thought that the typeface for "G.E.M." is too bold.
Fig 2.4 Logo Typeface (12.9.2023)
Cecilia then changed the typeface based on the feedback given by our client. This typeface has more sense of playfulness compared to the previous one.
Fig 2.5 Deliverables (13.9.2023)
These are the deliverables that our client and our team agreed on. We will have to create a brand identity, packaging, poster and banner, website, and a promotional video for their Innofest.
- The typeface "Borax" could be used for the headings for posters, website, etc., but Ms Lilian also agrees with our collaborators that it isn't suitable for the logo.
- Ask the TBS students what they think about cup design 2 and 3, since the design is more interesting compared to the one they had chosen (design 1 with lid).
- The customizable cup idea sounds good, further discuss with the TBS students about the features.
- Decide what needs to be done for the branding
- Modify cup design
- Create mood board for branding art direction
WEEK 4
Fig 3.1 TBS Project Brief - version 2 (18.9.2023)
On week 4, our client informed us that they changed their project brief, and
they will be selling bamboo tumblers instead of bamboo cups.
Fig 3.2 Finalized Product (18.9.2023)
They also included a finalized product PDF, meaning we don't need to design
the products anymore. However, we still need to model the tumblers, because we will need them for the animation as well as the product images.
Fig 3.3 Visual References (18.9.2023)
These are the visual references for the website, packaging design, poster, banner, promotional video, and product images. However, we still don't have a clear art direction. It will cause the problem of the deliverables are in different styles, and the brand won't have a strong identity.
Fig 3.4 Logo by Cecelia (18.9.2023)
The image on the left from Fig 3.4 is a sketch from TBS, and the three
images next to it are the digitized versions done by Cecilia. The idea is to
form a bamboo cup using the letters "G-E-M". Personally, I think that the
idea is interesting, but it is not well-executed. Therefore, our group had
to continue exploring on the logo design.
Fig 3.5 Logo by Cecelia (23.9.2023)
These are the digitized logo done by Cecilia based on the sketches drawn by
Vernice.
Fig 3.6 Logo by Evaleez (23.9.2023)
Evaleez also attempted a few logo designs. I quite like the designs, they are minimalistic and kind of cute.
Fig 3.7 Logo by Jo Min (23.9.2023)
I suddenly have an idea from the logo idea given by our client and I decided
to modify it. I used the letters "G-E-M" as the negative space to form a bamboo cup. However, it might not fit the brand really well as our client to change their product into bamboo tumblers instead of bamboo cups. It also doesn't look playful.
Fig 3.8 Logo by Evaleez (24.9.2023)
These are some logo Evaleez designed based on the logos done by Cecilia shown in Fig 3.5.
Fig 3.9 Color Palette (23.9.2023)
From the previous meeting with our client, they requested the color palette to be green with some cream color. This is the reference image we found, and they agreed with the color choices.
Fig 3.10 Graphic Elements Visual References (23.9.2023)
These are the visual references for the graphic elements. We were thinking of some illustration graphics with some abstract shapes.
Fig 3.11 Graphic Elements by Cecilia (23.9.2023)
These are the graphic elements done by Cecilia. Ms Lilian thinks that the ones with geometrical shapes are interesting.
Fig 3.12 Primary and Secondary Typeface Options (23.9.2023)
We searched for typefaces that we think could fit the art direction of the brand and put them on the miro board, so that we can vote later on.
Fig 3.13 Website Wireframe (23.9.2023)
Fig 3.14 Website Wireframe (23.9.2023)
Fig 00 and Fig 00 are the wireframes for the website done by Vernice, Cheryl, and Britney. These are the layouts that they made, but we haven't decided on the final layout.
For the packaging design, we mainly have 2 ideas. The first idea is that the packaging can be reused as other things such as storage box, because one of the aims of the brand is sustainability. The other idea is to keep the packaging as simple as possible to not waste resources. Siew Ni made a cylindrical packaging sketch which is somewhat related to the shape of bamboo. However, our client wants to cut cost on the packaging. So, they prefer to have a box that expands, and the product information will be on the inner surface of the box.
Fig 3.17 Promotional Video Visual References (23.9.2023)
These are the visual references for the promotional video. We are planning to combine 3D rendered animation with motion graphics.
Fig 3.18 Promotional Video Storyboard - version 1 (23.9.2023)
I created the storyboard for the promotional video that will be played on loop on the Innofest. At first our client wants a video with voice-over. However, we think that the people visiting the Innofest will not be able to hear the audio clearly. So we suggested them to have background music and sound effects for the audio.
Week 4 Feedback:
- Our art direction is still not there yet.
- The logo still needs some exploration.
- The packaging design idea is interesting, proposed it to our client.
Week 4 Next Course of Action:
- Finalize moodboard
- Solidify the art direction
WEEK 5
Fig 4.1 Reference Image from TBS (29.9.2023)
As we need a clearer idea on the art direction our client wants, we asked for more elaboration. They shared with us this image and they wanted something like this image by @heymotherchuckers on Instagram, which is kind of lifestyle-oriented. They also mentioned that instead of a playful art direction that they requested from the beginning, "energetic" will be more accurate.
Fig 4.2 Revised Mood Board (29.9.2023)
We had a meeting with our client to have a more in depth understanding on
their intended art direction. They selected some reference images from our
miro board that suits their idea. Based on their selection, we concluded that they might want something that incorporates typography into the images. Then, we searched for
more images that are related to the idea. The above shown is the revised mood board, and our client think that it is nice.
Fig 4.3 Logo Exploration by Evaleez (30.10.2023)
The logo with a green box around is the most preferred by our client. Based on it, Evaleez made a few more exploration and try to fit the letters "E-M" within the design.
Fig 4.4 Color Palette (30.10.2023)
Our client wants the main color to be green and cream colors. However, we felt that it will be difficult for us to bring out the playfulness with such calm color palette. Thus, we added two more shades of green, a yellow, and an orange color as the secondary color.
Fig 4.5 Typeface (30.10.2023)
From the typeface choices shown in Fig 3.12, we chose Croissant One as the heading typeface, and DM Sans as the typeface for the body text. Croissant One is a serif typeface, while DM Sans is a sans serif typeface. This is to create contrast between the heading and body text. I personally feel that the typeface Croissant One looks more lively compared to the previous typeface used in the logo (Chaloops). It has a really nature-like look. Our client likes the chosen typefaces too.
Fig 4.6 Promotional Video Storyboard - version 2 (1.10.2023)
Based on the feedback I received on week 5, I made some minor changes to the
storyboard.
Fig 4.7 Packaging Visual References (30.10.2023)
These are the visual references for the packaging design. Our group had an idea of having the silhouette of the product out the packaging.
Fig 4.8 Packaging Sketch by Siew Ni (30.10.2023)
During the previous meeting with TBS, they confirmed that they want a
packaging similar to a cake box, which can spread into a flat piece, and the
information will be printed inside the box. This is to cut cost. Siew Ni made a sketch based on their request.
Fig 4.9 Poster Visual References (27.9.2023)
These are the visual references for the poster.
Fig 4.10 Banner Visual References (27.9.2023)
These are the visual references we had for the banner design. The main visual will be the product and the brand name itself, as it is the most important things that we want the viewers to see at first sight. We were later informed that we are not in charged of the banner design.
Fig 4.11 Revised Deliverables (1.10.2023)
During the end of week 5, our client confirmed that we do not need to design the poster and banner, as the SOMAC students are in charged of them.
Fig 4.12 Task 2 Presentation Slides (1.10.2023)
We compiled everything we have for task 2 into a slides in Canva to be presented to our client.
Fig 4.13 Task 2 Project Document - Google Docs (1.10.2023)
For easier reference, we created a project document using Google Docs. We transferred the information into Google Slides for our submission as per Ms Lilian's request.
Fig 4.14 Task 2 Project Document Slides (1.10.2023)
We filled in the required information into the project document slides. The above is the final outcome.
Week 5 Feedback:
- Our group needs to sit down together and finalize the art direction.
- There are some interesting logo designs, still need to further develop them.
- The animation should be around 30 seconds to 60 seconds, 1.5 minutes is too long.
- The storyboard looks okay. Try shooting and editing Scene 4 and see how it turns out. If it doesn't look nice, we might want to consider deleting this scene as it is not that important.
- The minimalist and playful aspect should conceptualize into the rendering, color, space, composition, etc.
- For the website, Ms Lilian don't reckon us creating the "Add to Cart" page as it involves e-commerce, and this is just a prototype.
- The graphic elements are nice.
- The idea of having reusable packaging in good.
Week 5 Next Course of Action:
- Finalize art direction, decide on primary and secondary typeface
- Refine logo
WEEK 6
Fig 5.1 Presentation Slides (3.10.2023)
We had our presentation on Tuesday (3/10). Two out of five of our client joined the zoom meeting. They didn't have any feedback on our work, as we showed them during our previous meeting.
Fig 5.2 Project Document (3.10.2023)
We submitted the project document slides in the shared Google Drive folder.
Week 6 Feedback:
- We need to work a bit faster, as we are slightly behind compared to the other two groups.
- The art direction is quite coherent and consistent.
- The logo design is not there yet, we still need to further explore.
- The logo needs to be finalized as soon as possible or else if will be difficult for the application.
- The graphic elements are interesting, but yet to see the application.
- Slides are well organized.
- We need to get the text information for the packaging and website from TBS as soon as possible.
- We need to make as much progression as we can for the prototyping stage, task 4 is for refinement.
- Don't suggest too much to our client if we can't make it on time.
Week 6 Next Course of Action:
- Further develop and finalize logo
- Start prototyping

REFLECTION
Experience:
Task 2 was slightly difficult to manage. I suppose it is because all the members are quite busy with our other modules. Time management is really important for this module in order to produce good output. The communication within the group and between TDS and TBS was ok, but maybe we need more discussions to make our idea more solid.
Observation:
I found out that my multitasking skill has improved slightly. I become more comfortable with working on different things at the same time, which I think that it is a useful skill. Besides, I notice that I need to be more experimental on ideas.
Findings:
I realized that visual references are very handy to help maintain a consistent design. I should utilize this for my other projects as well.
